Kenneth Winston, Lecturer in Ethics, teaches political and professional ethics. He developed the Kennedy School's course on ethics for mid-career students, which has been offered since 1987. In recent years, he has worked to build the school's capacity in comparative international ethics, developing new cases for classroom use and teaching in overseas venues, especially in Asia. Winston has written extensively on case teaching, professional ethics, and legal theory. Recent articles include: "Moral Competence in the Practice of Democratic Governance," "On the Ethics of Exporting Ethics: The Right to Silence in Japan and the U.S.," and "The Internal Morality of Chinese Legalism." Winston holds degrees in philosophy from Harvard College and Columbia University. He has been a Fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies, a Senior Research Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and a John Dewey Senior Fellow. He was selected by the KSG class of 2005 for the Manuel Carballo Award for Excellence in Teaching. He lives in Dorchester with his wife, Mary Jo Bane, and enjoys hiking, birding, and cooking.
