Post #2: Why We're Embarking on This Business AI Ethics Journey

Welcome back to our Business AI Ethics blog! In our inaugural entry, we explored the significance of AI systems across today's business landscape. Jeff took the pen for today’s entry – en route home from an exhilarating session with a Fortune 50 company’s Risk team. There, we investigated the paramount importance of adopting an Applied AI Ethics approach. This encounter underscored not only the critical nature of our work but also the glaring gap in the world for an effective AI ethics framework tailored to business leaders.

Today, let’s dive into the heart of the matter and uncover the five compelling reasons why we’re embarking on this transformative journey:

1. Urgent Need for Comprehensive AI Ethics Guidance and Frameworks

The pace of AI advancement is dizzying, and business leaders are racing to harness AI's potential faster than their competitors. Yet, this quest for AI supremacy has revealed an urgent need for practical AI ethics guidance and innovative decision-making frameworks that can operate seamlessly on a global scale. It’s clear that business leaders grasp the significance of AI ethics but need targeted education to bridge the gap between ethical principles and actionable business strategies.

2. Ineffectiveness of a Principles Based Approach

The mere articulation of responsible AI ethics principles often falls short of implementable guidance. These principles, though well-intentioned, are ambiguous, vague, and disconnected from real world action. They remain mere words on a page unless they evolve into actionable frameworks that businesses can seamlessly integrate into their operations. For an insightful exploration of the pitfalls of a principles-based approach to AI ethics, see A High-Level Overview of AI Ethics by Kazim and Koshiyama (2021).

3. Business Leaders' Critical Role Amid Limited Global Regulation

In the contemporary landscape, global AI regulation is immature, with no guarantee of extensive rules on the horizon. Some policymakers tread cautiously, wary of stifling innovation through overregulation. They adopt a ‘wait and see’ approach. In this period of limited global AI regulation, the role of business leaders in ensuring effective, ethical AI governance becomes even more pronounced.

4. Mounting Pressures from Various Stakeholders

Business leaders find themselves caught in a whirlwind of mounting pressures. Their workforce, especially the influential Gen Z and Millennial cohort who advocate for AI systems that uphold humanity’s values. Customers are demanding AI solutions that align with ethical standards and will balk at products that harm the world. Furthermore, a few institutional investors have expressed their responsible AI expectations for investee companies. (Click here for such a statement from Legal and General Investment Management). We can expect others to quickly follow suit, with proxy advisory firms trailing close behind. This underscores the pressing need to comprehensively address AI ethics.

5. Ethical AI as a Source of Competitive Advantage

Ethical AI isn’t just a moral compass; it’s a strategic game-changer for businesses. Companies that prioritize and showcase their commitment to responsible AI stand poised to attract top talent, cultivate unwavering customer loyalty, and differentiate themselves in the market. Ethical AI aligns with societal values and enhances a company's brand, paving the way for enduring success.
