Elaine Scarry

Professor Scarry's interests include 19th Century British Novel, 20th Century drama, Language of Physical Pain, and Structure of Verbal and Material Making in Art, Science, and the Law. Her publications include The Body in Pain; Dreaming by the Book; On Beauty; and Being Just, and articles on war and social contract. In addition to teaching English, she has lectured in law and medicine, and delivered the Tanner Lectures on Human Values at Yale University. A Guggenheim Fellow, she has been a Fellow at the Getty Research Institute and at the Institute of Advanced Study in Berlin and in Palo Alto.

Professor Scarry has been a Faculty Associate of the Center since 2000, and was a Visiting Scholar in Ethics in 2008-2009.
