Reed Shafer-Ray

Reed Shafer-Ray is a senior concentrating in Social Studies and pursuing a secondary in Mathematical Sciences. His work focuses on American social movements, identity politics, and polarization within public discourse, and how these issues relate to democratic principles and the pursuit of social justice. He is also interested in the cultural and moral consequences of contemporary American inequality. Outside of class, he is the Legislative Director of the Harvard College Democrats, plays club soccer, is involved with IOP Civics, was a research assistant to HKS Professor David Gergen, and has worked in the past as a Research Intern for Public Citizen, and a Communications Intern for the Enough Project in Washington D.C.

Financed with a Lester Kissel Grant in Practical Ethics, Reed is currently writing a senior thesis on the philosophical tension between identity politics and the ideologies of inclusion and equality that accompany political liberalism.
