Joel Suarez is an Assistant Professor at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies. He is a historian with research interests in United States labor and intellectual history, with a particular focus on histories of freedom and domination. His first book project, titled The Labor of Liberty: Work and the Problem of Freedom in American History, examines how workers experienced and thought about transformations in their worlds of work and how these changes unsettled understandings of freedom from abolitionism’s challenge to slavery in the nineteenth century to deindustrialization and the rise of low-wage service sector work in the twentieth century. Joel earned his PhD in History from Princeton University in 2019.
