At the Harvard Kennedy School, Fred Schauer was the Frank Stanton Professor of the First Amendment. He has taught the required ethics course for MPP students and courses on freedom of speech and the press at the Kennedy School and the Law School. A specialist in constitutional law and the philosophy of law, his books include Free Speech: A Philosophical Enquiry and Playing by the Rules: A Philosophical Examination of Rule-Based Decision-Making in Law and in Life. Rules and Reasoning: Essays in Honour of Fred Schauer is an analysis by other scholars of his work on legal reasoning. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
