Catherine Zheng, a junior social studies concentrator, will engage in archival research to examine the ethical underpinnings of the legal insanity defense, and assess whether the defense should be reformed. She will also conduct interviews to determine if/how mental health courts - treatment-oriented alternatives to general courts - might enhance the agency and choice of mentally ill defendants, and allow judges, lawyers and mental health practitioners to carry out their professional duties in less coercive ways.
