Frances Kamm Featured in the Hong Kong Economic Journal

February 14, 2018

Dr. Frances Kamm's recent Lanson Lecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Centre for Bioethics was featured in the Hong Kong Economic Journal yesterday.

The text is in Chinese, but a summary has been provided by Dr. Derrick K. S. Au, Director of the CUHK Centre for Bioethics and co-author of the article."The title probably may be translated as “Doctor assisting patient to die? Philosophical analysis and contentions”. It starts with providing the American context of Judge Gorsuch’s emphasis on DDE, then goes on with the lecture, and Tse’s response. A few points in the lecture are used: (i) the ‘Lesser Bad’ concept; (ii) the 4-step argument; and (iii) the argument against Gorsuch’s DDE position (his emphasis on using intention to draw a line). After a brief treatment of Dr Tse’s response, the article closes by noting Kamm's final response. There is an author’s note in bracket at the end, noting that whereas Dr Tse’s part has been previewed by him before print, the part on the lecture and response is a summary account of a rich lecture, and the authors would be accountable for inaccuracies if any."
