Danielle Allen and Colleague Emily Sneff Discover New Parchment Declaration of Independence

April 21, 2017

Today's New York Times reports the exciting discovery of a "previously unknown early handwritten parchment of the Declaration, buried in a provincial archive in Britain" by Danielle Allen, director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, and her colleague Emily Sneff. The discovery arises from the work of their Delcaration Resources Project, based at Harvard. The duo revealed their discovery in a paper, "The Sussex Declaration: Dating the Parchment Manuscript of the Declaration of Independence Held at the West Sussex Record Office," they presented today at a conference on "Ideological Origins at 50: Power, Rights, and the Rise and Fall of Free States" at Yale University. Congratulations to Allen and Sneff on this fantastic find!
