In this talk, Professor Seana Shiffrin, Pete Kameron Professor of Law and Social Justice and Professor of Philosophy at the UCLA School of Law, will discuss the free speech issues concerning Donald Trump’s access to social media platforms, advance the position that some of his most controversial speech as President violated the First Amendment, and discuss the moral and legal implications of those violations.
Professor Shiffrin’s research focuses on issues in moral, political and legal philosophy, as well as matters of legal doctrine concerning equality, autonomy, and the social conditions for their realization. Her book, Speech Matters: On Lying, Morality, and the Law (Princeton University Press, 2014), explores the ethics of communication and the connection between the prohibition on lying, freedom of speech, and moral progress.
